Tomorrow I will send you some of Ernst's anecdotal accounts of the events of these past few days and weeks, details of which I have shipped to you in bits and pieces, since the news came in from several fronts - and did it ever come fast and furious!
Let's just say that the ban of Ernst's lead attorney, Doug Christie, preventing him from holding a press conference in the Charles Lynch Press Gallery on Parliament Hill, has kicked loose a monumental avalanche and has vastly broadened both the struggle for Freedom of Speech itself - and our chances that maybe, just maybe, attitudes in Canada are changing in a major way in favor of Freedom of Speech - and Ernst Zundel's right to have his say! His way!
Today, I have another request for you: State your opinions one more time, and ship 'em cyber fashion!
It WORKS! Believe you me - it WORKS!
For those who are new to the Net and to this ZGram informational outreach service, I will tell you how to have an impact. Your letters make a difference! And what a mighty difference!
ZGram letter writers are snowing their opinions all over Canada - and quite a few of these letters are published, causing more and more folks to come out in our favor! What a difference strong, determined but polite activism can make in reining in these highly offensive censorship abusers!
You simply have NO IDEA!
And one more thing:
I never knew how widespread my ZGram range was - I knew that lots and lots of people were copying them and passing them out, posting them in news groups, replicating them in their own newsletters, etc. etc. but tonight I have an indication.
I remember someone once told me that law makers judge the strength of their constituents' opinions by the numbers of letters they receive - each letter expressing a strong feeling counts for a 1,000 people who feel likewise.
If that is so, I have tens if not hundreds of thousands of readers who feel as I do! It has been raining letters!
So - what that means is this: I am asking you - not just Canadians, but citizens of the world - to write another letter. PLEASE! It will take only five minutes, and I will give you a bushel full of e-mail addresses to whom you might ship that letter all at once if the spirit moves you thus. (Jamie McCarthy of yesterday's Nizkor will shriek that this is a spam, but so be it! This matter calls for a speedy response and is not frivolous!)
Below is a sample letter - in English and in French. But don't just copy it! Please use your own opinions! Please let's be classy! We are not simpletons who need to use offensive words. We are proud men and women who don't like to be trampled on - and certainly not by the Shrill Minority who seem to think they are the cat's meow and the navel of the universe!
Here is your sample letter - first English, then French:
"I have learned today that Mr. Doug Christie, an attorney representing Mr. Ernst Zundel, has been banned from Parliament Hill.
"I understand Mr. Christie had been slated to give a news conference, in the area designated for such purposes in Parliament's Centre Block, on January 19, 1999, on Mr. Zundel's recourse to the courts to overturn a similar ban placed on him last June.
"It is reported that the Speaker of the House, the Honourable G. Parent, issued the latest edict Monday after a majority of House leaders decided Mr. Christie, like Mr. Zundel, will not be welcome in the Parliament Buildings.
"With all due respect, I believe it is not acceptable, in a free society such as ours that our forebears gave their lives to build and to uphold as a freedom-loving country and a democracy, for the government to muzzle the expression of free speech, as you have done in the case of Mr. Doug Christie and Mr. Zundel before him.
"When Alexander the Great, as victorious conqueror and Master of the Universe of his day, approached the philosopher Diogenes (whom he greatly admired) with an offer to grant him any favour he wished, Diogenes replied, "stand a little less between me and my sun"; meaning, please do not stymie my freedom of speech and my search for truth. Words that are as valid today, as they were 2,300 years ago.
"I am pained to observe that the time has now come for Canadian citizens to have to say likewise to each and every one of you; not, of course, as invincible conquerors, but as their elected representatives: "Please stand a little less between us and our sun".
"I therefore ask you to please cease and desist indulging in such pernicious totalitarian proclivities, and look, instead, to the pressing business of this country."
