Good Morning from the Zundelsite

This was sent to me with the subject heading "Urgent! Please read this!" I pass it on to you without further ado!

The only comment I allow myself here and now is that it is noteworthy how the liberal and Jewish elements are piggybacking their grievance on the backs of the wronged Germans and Italians!

The Times they are a'changing!

!!ACTION ALERT!!

CALL YOUR SENATORS TO INSIST THAT GERMAN AMERICANS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS VITAL LEGISLATION

SENATOR RUSSELL FEINGOLD (D-WI), at the request of German Americans, plans to introduce the Wartime Treatment of European Americans and European Refugees Study Act by October 6th. Pursuant to the proposed Act, a Commission will be established to study the US Government`s WWII mistreatment of European Americans (primarily naturalized citizens and permanent resident aliens of German and Italian ancestry) and certain Latin Americans of German and Italian ancestry. The Commission will also review the Government`s refusal to allow persecuted European refugees (primarily Jewish) entry to the US during WWII.

CIVIL LIBERTIES VIOLATIONS. During WWII, German and Italian Americans, primarily resident aliens and to a lesser extent, naturalized citizens, were subject to many restrictions on their freedom including exclusion, evacuation, travel restrictions, property confiscation and years of internment. This ethnic discrimination is unknown to most Americans and the world. Millions of German American sons and daughters fought and many died in WWII to keep the world free. Meanwhile, our Government violated the constitutional rights of thousands of German Americans at home. By passage of Senator Feingold`s bill, injustices suffered on the home front will finally be acknowledged.

SENATE BILL 1909/HR 2442. In November 1999, the House of Representatives passed HR 2442, Rep. Rick Lazio`s (R-NY) Wartime Violations of Italian American Civil Liberties Act. Senator Robert Torricelli introduced the same bill in the Senate. It, S. 1909, is now pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee. German Americans are not included although their suffering equals, if not, far exceeds, that of the Italians. The Judiciary Committee could decide in the next week whether to replace S. 1909/HR 2442 with Senator Feingold`s bill or to send S. 1909/HR 2442 without amendment to the floor for vote. NOW IS THE TIME TO INSIST THAT YOUR SENATORS DEMAND THAT S. 1909 IS AMENDED TO INCLUDE GERMAN AMERICANS. Your call is especially vital if your Senator is on the Judiciary Committee. CALL THE CAPITOL HILL SWITCHBOARD: 1 202 224 3121, ask for your Senator and you will be transferred to his or her office. Tell the receptionist at your Senator`s office that you want to express your opinion on S. 1909/HR 2442, the Wartime Violations of Italian Americans Civil Liberties Act, and explain that it is now pending before the Judiciary Committee. If the receptionist refers you to another staff person and that person is unavailable, LEAVE A DETAILED VOICEMAIL. Frequently, he or she will not have time to call you back to hear your opinion, so you must leave a detailed message.

THE MESSAGE TO CONVEY. It is unfair that S. 1909, now pending before the Judiciary Committee, requires US Government acknowledgement of the WWII mistreatment of only Italian Americans. S. 1909 MUST BE AMENDED TO INCLUDE GERMAN AMERICANS. Our other legislative goal is public education, but not monetary reparations. Many believe that only the Japanese were mistreated by the US during WWII. Only federal legislation can correct that falsehood. At least 11,000 Germans Americans, primarily resident aliens, were interned. Families and lives were brutally destroyed. 300,000 Germans were forced to register as enemy aliens and were subject to restrictions on travel and personal property ownership. Tens of thousands of German Americans were subject to curfews. Americans ensure that such ethnic discrimination will never occur again only by forcing the Government to review and acknowledge its past wrongs. IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU CALL YOUR SENATORS IMMEDIATELY, IDEALLY BY SEPTEMBER 27.

The following persons are members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. An asterisk indicates the sponsor and cosponsors of S. 1909, the Wartime Violations of Italian American Civil Liberties Act, who are also members of the Judiciary Committee. Call as many as you can, but most important are your own Senators and Senator Hatch. It is recommended that you also call Senator Feingold to indicate your support of his legislation. Again, the number to reach any of these Senators is the Capitol Switchboard number: 1 202 224 3121.
