For newcomers, here is an update on Australia's most prominent Revisionist website, the Adelaide Institute, and its controversial director, Dr. Fredrick Töben.
Dr. Töben is a native German who came to Australia as a child with his parents and has lived there many years as an Australian citizen. As happens with practically all prominent Revisionist websites, the Adelaide Institute website became the target of a savage censorship attack, spearheaded by Jeremy Jones, the leader of Australian Jewry.
Dr. Töben had traveled to Europe about two years ago to visit Auschwitz and other concentration camp sites first hand and stopped in Germany to meet with German leaders so as to find out, precisely, what he could or could not say regarding the so-called Holocaust, a topic that is forbidden by law to be questioned in Germany.
Dr. Töben went straight to the offices of Hans Heiko Klein, Germany's most fanatical prosecutor of Revisionists. He put a few questions to Klein, who avoided a clear answer, and was invited to return the next day to continue the expected dialogue. When he arrived in Klein's office, instead of finding answers to his questions or a discussion of Germany's forbidden topics, he found himself confronted with a plain- clothes policeman who promptly arrested the naturalized Australian.
Dr. Töben spent 7 months in prison in Germany until his trial could be conducted, after which he was sentenced for, among other charges, for ". . . defaming the memory of the dead." This sentence is now under appeal.
The Australian censorship struggle continues. Yesterday's ABC's television program (ABC TV News, 7 PM, 5 April 2001) carried the following exchange between two of ABC moderators, Jeremy Jones, and Dr. Fredrick Töben:
[START]
Dominique Schwarz:
Members of Australia's Jewish Community will take controversial Adelaide historian Fredrick Töben to the Federal Court in a bid to eliminate his controversial website. But Dr Toben remains unrepentant over his questioning of the Nazi Holocaust saying he believes he has no case to answer.
Graham Badger:
Dr Fredrick Töben's mobile phone was running hot today with requests for interviews over his latest run-in with the Australian Jewish community. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry is seeking the enforcement of an order made last October by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. It demanded the removal of material which challenges the existence of the Nazi Holocaust against millions of Jews during the 1930s and 40s. It also wants an apology to the Council's National Vice-President Jeremy Jones.
Jeremy Jones:
All we are asking for is that Fredrick Töben obeys the law of Australia. He is involved himself in unlawful behaviour. Therefore he must desist from this behaviour.
Graham Badger:
But Dr Töben says he believes he and the institute have no case to answer.
Fredrick Töben:
I consider what is happening to be an act of mental rape. If you deny me my freedom to think and to speak, then you deny me my humanity.
Graham Badger:
Dr Töben says there may be articles on his site by other authors that contain intemperate language. If so, he will withdraw the articles, but he would defend his statements and his right to freedom of speech.
Fredrick Töben:
We shall certainly apologise to Jeremy Jones and to the Australian Jewish community if we have used intemperate language. But we will never apologise for having put on the web factual statements that can be proven to be correct.Graham Badger:
The Council says that's unsatisfactory. A hearing is scheduled for next month. Graham Badger, ABC News.
[END]
Postscript words from the Adelaide Institute:
1. Owing to Dr Töben's visit to Iran, the 10 May Federal Court hearing date has been vacated until another is set for June.
2. In essence, Jeremy Jones wishes to criminalise truth- telling, as is already the case in Germany. David Irving was convicted in Germany for telling the truth about the fraudulent Krema I "homicidal gas chamber". This conviction gave Irving "a bad character" - so bad that Minister for Immigration, Philip Ruddock, would not permit Irving to enter Australia.
Are we going to let Jeremy Jones and his Zionist friends introduce such an immoral legal weapon into Australia? We shall see when Fredrick Töben faces Jones in a battle of the wills contest in the Federal Court.]
Thought for the Day:
"No one in this world has the right to put Israel on trial. No one. On the contrary, Israel may have the right to put others on trial, but certainly no one has the right to put the Jewish people and the state of Israel on trial," Mr. Sharon told Israel Radio.
