Herewith it is my treat to offer you the concluding segment of S Michael McMillen's thoughtful essay, "A Heretic's Hope":
Kosher conservatives who glibly flatter themselves (to be) the loyal opposition to the Clintonites, while issuing self-congratulatory thunderbolts of derision against the Nazis and contemporary nationalists, might be enlightened by comparing the American welfare-state status quo with the relief schemes of the Third Reich.
Although this is a mammoth area of inquiry, it is clear enough that they would discover at least as much intrusion, bureaucratic red tape and corruption in the American entitlement morass as they would in that of Nazi Germany.
They would also find (as noted above) that for all its economic and philosophical faults, National Socialism at least refrained from global altruism and the deliberate destruction of its own national stock. If such a study is to be pursued, however, it is not likely to be pursued by our conservatives.
The politicians and thinkers on the right may dress more neatly than their counterparts on the left and feel a genuine shiver of abhorrence at the socio-sexual agenda of the left, but too many of these right-wingers - out of ignorance, design or cowardice - subscribe to the same root philosophical premises.
These premises include: wide government involvement in public education, charity and relief; economic and political globalism; multiculturalism and egalitarianism; a virulent hatred of racially consciouss nationalism; and acquiescence in the belief that Israel and the Jews are above reproach on account of German policies towards Jews during the Second World War.
Locke and the Founding Fathers spent more time crafting an explicit political philosophy than tending to the questions of race and nationhood. Their omission, however, is much more understandable. At the time they wrote, nationalism and a high degree of racial purity were taken for granted. England was English, France was French, Spain was Spanish. Unlike contemporary freedom fighters, the men who launched America had the luxury of taking racial homogeneity for granted.
America - and the rest of the West - must pioneer nationalist visions yet undreamt by her sons and daughters. We might call our vision National Capitalism, but the second term has become so linked with financial chicanery that it might not convey the right idea. Perhaps something like National Benevolence? The trouble with that is that Benevolence is an ethical, not a political, concept.
What we need is love of our own people and the freedom to practice it.
So why bring up Dr Goebbels? He was probably the Nazi leader most detested by foreigners during the 1930s and 1940s. His popularity at home wasn't always at the top of the charts either. Along with Heinrich Himmler and the ever-demonised Führer, Goebbels stands today as the embodiment of what most Westerners hate and fear most about the Third Reich. The purpose of calling the anniversary of his birth to your attention is simply to show, if only in a few snippets of his work, that the same enemy he saw to the East in 1935 is no less active, cunning or dangerous today.
"Communism with the Mask Off." The title is quite seasonal. It reminds us of the absurd American holiday called Halloween, which is observed the end of this week. The commingling of the sentimentalising of childhood and the preoccupation with death, decay and demons that this occasion brings to the fore is a signfiicant index to our bizarre anti-culture. Spoiled children dress up in costumes that portray - for the most part - evil and death, romp about begging for candy and then take off the masks and return to the wobbly pedestals on which their permissive mothers and fathers have venerated them.
Meanwhile the politicians, trendy intellectuals and cosmopolitan sophisticates present themselves as delicate angels of tenderness and light who are going to make the world safe for everyone. How many of our people are even curious as to what lies behind these outlandishly idiotic façades? They just drift along, and like indulgent neighbours continue to toss their money into the government's ever-open Halloween sacks.
Trick and Treachery is the name of the game.
It is this heretic's hope that the message of Dr Goebbels speech will be spread to others by those vigilant souls who are mindful of the hour's peril. Some would say that it's wise to warn others but that we shouldn't drag Dr Goebbels' name into it. I say why not!-and the reason is not just the obvious shock value.
The enemies of truth have already managed to proscribe the works of many Americans they deem "offensive." The public schools spew their adoration of every third-world malcontent and mud-sculptor across the enforced curriculum and thus seek to rob the children of their own rich heritage. If the enemies of Truth have the gall to hector us about what to read and not to read, then let's give them something to whine about.
Do you want total heresy? Some day orthodoxy may again be orthodoxy and heresy may be tolerated yet intellectually and morally condemned. For the time being, the hope of America is with the heretics.
Thought for the Day:
"Who sees with equal eyes, as God of all, A hero perish, or a swallow fall?
Atoms or systems into ruin hurl'd,
And now a bubble burst - and now a world.
(Alexander Pope)
